Sugar Rush

The Short Version

Sugar Rush is a Pragmatic Play title from 2022. It has no reels and no paylines. Forty-nine candies fill a square field of seven columns and seven rows, and a payout is made whenever five or more identical candies form a connected shape running up, down, left or right. Corner contact does not join two candies, so a diagonal line of sweets is worth nothing.

The mechanic that gives the game its reputation is the multiplier attached to an individual cell of the field, which doubles each time another payout forms on that exact cell. Three later titles use the same engine, and each has a page of its own here.

Reading The Forty-Nine Cells

A large field changes how a spin behaves. One button press can trigger a chain of five, six or seven consecutive payouts as candies keep dropping into the gaps left by the previous one. A spin therefore takes time to resolve, and the final total often bears little relation to the first payout in the chain.

The reason is what each payout leaves behind. Every cell occupied by a paid shape is flagged, and those flags are the raw material for the multipliers described below. Early payouts in a chain are rarely about the money; they are about marking the field.

Candy Values

Seven ordinary candies share the field. Three jelly bears in orange, purple and red are the cheap ones, a green star and a purple candy sit in the middle, and an orange heart and a pink lollipop pay the most. Payouts scale sharply with shape size rather than smoothly, which is why a fifteen-candy shape is worth dozens of times a five-candy one.

Each value is a multiple of the wager. At US$1 a spin, fifteen lollipops return US$150, and cell multipliers are applied on top of that figure.

A rocket carrying candy balls serves as the scatter. It can land on any cell, has no value of its own, and exists solely to open the free spins once three or more are present.

Cell Multipliers Explained With Numbers

Once a cell has been flagged, a second payout covering it creates a x2 multiplier there. A third payout on the same cell makes it x4. After that the doubling continues through x8, x16, x32 and x64 to a ceiling of x128. Reaching that ceiling requires seven payouts on one cell, which is far less common than the figure makes it sound.

When a single paid shape covers several multiplied cells, the values are summed and the sum is applied to that payout. Three cells at x32, x16 and x8 produce x56. If the shape itself was worth 2x the wager, it is settled at 112 wagers, so a US$0.50 spin returns US$56 from one shape. This addition rule, not the size of the shape, is what produces the large numbers in this game.

One limitation governs everything: during ordinary spins the flags and multipliers are erased the moment the spin ends. All accumulation has to fit inside a single spin.

Scatters Free Spins And Retriggers

Three rockets are the entry price, and the count determines the length of the round:

Additional rockets appearing during the round award further spins on top of the original count. The critical change inside the round is that flags and multipliers are no longer erased between spins; they remain until the round ends.

Why Free Spins Are Worth More Than Ordinary Spins

Removing the reset changes the arithmetic completely. In ordinary play a cell can realistically reach x4 or x8 within one spin.
